Parallels Workstation virtualizes the Realtek AC'97 compatible sound card.
Device status:
If you wish to temporary disable operations with a sound device without deleting it from configuration, deselect Enabled checkbox.
Note: If you start the operating system with the sound device disabled, you cannot change this option when Virtual Machine is running.
If the sound device is enabled, it can be connected/disconnected while VM is running.
To start guest OS with the sound device activated, select the Activate sound at startup checkbox.
Emulation:
Note. If you are not satisfied with the quality of sound issued, a special AC'97 sound driver is available for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 guest OSes and for OS/2 and eComStation guest OSes. You can install it instead of standard one.
Windows primary OS:
If you want the Virtual Machine automatically select the default sound adapter select Use default sound adapter option. Instead you may specify the particular sound adapter in the Specify sound adapter list.
Linux primary OS:
After the sound is enabled, the Output Device field appears containing a list of sound adapters and virtual sound devices available on your real computer. If you don't want to produce sound but sound card is required by guest OS applications, you can select Loopback.
Notes: In Linux primary OS to be able to connect Virtual Machine sound drive to a real sound drive, you should have system privileges to access the real device. Otherwise the real sound device will not appear in the list of available devices despite it is installed on your computer.
Linux version of the Parallels Workstation allows to select Mixer Device.
