"that your owner's manual or your qualified mechanic should have the last word."

"1. Change oil and replace oil filter. Most modern vehicles now recommend"
"an interval of 7500 miles between oil changes. The quick lube shops, "
"however, would like you to change your oil every 3000 miles. So what should"
"you do? Most newer cars run very cleanly and an oil change every 3000 miles"
"is not essential, unless you drive in extreme conditions. On the other hand,"
"you shouldn't wait 7500 miles unless your driving is mostly highway, or you"
"don't intend to keep your car too long! My opinion on service: Every 4500 miles"

"2. Replace engine timing belt. (Not for all vehicles; check your owner's manual.)"
"Obey your owner's manual on this one, or you may be in for costly engine repair."
"Most manufacturers recommend replacing the timing belt every 60000 miles, although"
"some newer cars extend this interval to 90000 miles. Others now make 'permanent'"
"timing belts. My opinion on service: Obey your owner's manual, or every 60000 miles"

"3. Inspect/Replace Air Cleaner element. This is important; you usually need to "
"do this more often than the owner's manual recommends. It's cheap, and it will"
"improve your power and gas mileage, as well as extend the life of your engine. If "
"it's not too dirty, you can shake it out. Otherwise replace it. My opinion on service:"
"Check it every 15000 miles."

"K&N sells air filters for automobiles (available at auto parts stores) which can"
"last the life of the vehicle, although they need to be cleaned out periodically."
"The filters are expensive, but they also have other benefits: in my unscientific"
"experiments with my '92 Acclaim 3.0, a K&N filter notably improved the power and"
"responsiveness of the engine."

"4. Replace spark plugs (engine tune-up). On today's computer controlled cars,"
"a tune-up pretty much amounts to nothing more than changing the spark plugs"
"and performing a routine inspection. Many new vehicles now have Platinum tipped spark"
"plugs that supposedly will last for 100000 miles. Unfortunately, any spark plugs "
"are still susceptible to carbon buildup. My opinion on service: Replace platinum plugs "
"every 60000 miles, and regular resistor plugs (which tend to wear down and degrade "
"performance) every 30000 miles."

"5. Replace fuel filter and inspect fuel system. This is an item many people"
"ignore. Some get away with it, but eventually it causes problems with starting"
"and fuel delivery if not replaced. You might not even find this maintenance"
"item in your owner's manual. My opinion on service: Replace every 30000 miles."
