What is a DSN?

A DSN (Data Source Name) tells the operating system about the ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) compliant database you wish to use. Examples of ODBC compliant databases include Microsoft Access, SQL Server and Oracle.

If an ODBC driver already exists for your database just select it from the drop down list on the Database tab.

If you are using an unsecured Access Database then leave the User ID and Password empty.

How do I setup a DSN?

  1. Start the Windows control panel (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel)
  2. Double click on the ODBC Data Sources icon.
  3. You have the choice of creating a User DSN or a System DSN. A User DSN is only available to the user currently logged onto the machine, a System DSN is available to anyone who uses the machine. Decide which you wish to use and click the appropriate tab.
  4. Click "Add".
  5. Select the appropriate driver for the database you wish to use and click Finish. If there is no suitable driver on the list then contact your database vendor in order to receive an ODBC driver.
  6. The options given will depend on which Database you are using, but Data Source Name should specify a meaningful name (this name will show up on the DSN drop down list on the Database tab).
  7. If it is an MS Access database you are using, Click "Select" and point to the database you want to use.
  8. When you are finished selecting options, click OK.
